It’s day five which means Gift of Life International’s time here in Guyana for this training visit is coming to an end! Half of our team will leave late tonight, the other half being nurses and an intensivist to stay and watch over the patients as they finish their healing process.
Such moments are a powerful testament to the extraordinary difference we can make when we unite together. We invite you to learn more about how we are healing little hearts in Guyana.
None of this would be possible without the heartfelt generosity from our donations. We are profoundly grateful for your kindness in changing the lives of these precious children.
Our deepest thanks also goes out to our global network of partners and the Government of Guyana. Together, we are not just treating heart conditions—we are building a legacy of compassion, health, and a brighter tomorrow for every child in Guyana.
Farzana’s Story of Resilience
Our last case for this trip, but certainly not least, is Farzana!

Farzana with her favorite stuffed animal, a dinosaur she named Aaliyah.
Farzana is an eleven year old diagnosed with an ASD. Her and her family are from Turkeyen, which is a neighborhood in Georgetown, only a twenty five minute drive from the hospital.
Nigel, Farzana’s father, is a thirty-two year old construction worker and Michelle, Farzana’s mother, is a thirty-two year old cargo store employee. Farzana’s family did not know anything was wrong with her heart until one day she went to the doctor for a cold.
The doctors listened to her heart, heard a murmur, and referred her to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. This was when Farzana was seven or eight years old. Three days ago the family got a call that GOLI had an opening for a surgery, and the spot was to go to Farzana!
Farzana loves to play, eat, and watch her favorite shows. Her father says she’s not a troublesome child. Her favorite toy is her blue dinosaur which she has named Aaliyah! When asked what their favorite things about Farzana was, her mom and dad both said, “Everything! She’s my child, never rude or disgusting.” Farzana’s parents are hoping that after the surgery they no longer have to deal with the stress surrounding health issues. GOLI will do everything in our power to make this hope and wish come true!
Specialized Training in Pediatric Cardiac Care
As part of our visit, Gift of Life conducted a training program that equips local medical professionals with the specialized knowledge and skills necessary to care for young patients with complex heart conditions.
A key component of this training involves understanding the anesthetic considerations for both adult and pediatric patients with pulmonary hypertension.
This condition requires meticulous management during surgery, as patients with pulmonary hypertension are at increased risk of complications. Our team of experts, including anesthesiologists and intensivists, have worked closely with local medical staff to ensure they are well-prepared to manage these delicate situations, enhancing their ability to provide safe and effective care for children with congenital heart defects.
This training is not only vital for immediate patient care but also lays the foundation for a self-sufficient healthcare system in Guyana, where local professionals can confidently perform complex surgeries and manage critical cases independently. By focusing on such specialized areas, we’re ensuring that the knowledge shared during this visit will have a lasting impact, ultimately leading to better outcomes for children in need.

Challenges, Compassion, and Lasting Connections
This week has been full of obstacles and bumps in the road that the entire team has had to face, but each individual handled these instances with grace and resiliency. We could not be more grateful or proud of the entire team and each person’s ability to do their part even though it was not easy! Our team never let these instances ruin their mood, and knew how to overcome every hurdle swiftly and certainly.
Our team along with the local nurses cares for every kid in our care with passion and a sense that each child is their own.
It makes the whole team feel like they have formed a little family with the week coming to an end. The parents of the children we help are ever grateful for the opportunity to let their kids live healthy, normal lives and it is a very special feeling to experience this kind of gratitude from strangers.
Though, by the end of the week they do not feel like such strangers anymore. Today as everyone winded down from surgery and began doing inventory, the entire GOLI team was able to take some time and speak to these parents for longer periods of time than in the beginning of the week, as well as catch up with the children and see how everyone is doing.

Ronnie and Elijah’s fathers each gave presents of gratitude to the entire Gift of Life team and the local nurses who joined them this week.

The back of the heart gift.
From Elijah’s dad came a heart shaped figure with all of the children’s names who got surgery this week written on it, along with the phrase, “not all heroes wear capes, some of them wear scrubs.”

From here on out it is all about resting and recovering, and everyone who got surgery this week is doing just that! The children have a safe environment in which they are able to take all of the time that they need in order to heal.

Ginger and Ronnie went on a quick run around the unit!

We at Gift of Life are so thankful to our donors for the opportunity to continue to heal little hearts around the world and spread awareness about congenital heart defects. Without our donors and volunteers, as well as the cooperation of the hospitals and governments of the locations we visit, we would not be able to keep sharing our knowledge with others and saving little hearts. We are grateful for everyone who was able to make this happen, and we cannot wait for the next visit to Guyana!

The GOLI team with a few local staff!
