This year, a Rotary Grant sponsored by the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club in California and the Giza Metropolitan Rotary Club in Cairo will help heal the hearts of forty three children in Egypt!

Eight out of every one thousand children in Egypt are born each year with a congenital heart disease. Fifty percent of these children will need some sort of surgical intervention, whether it be through a cardiac catheterization procedure or an open heart surgery.

Due to limited resources, only half of these children will receive the care they need. Therefore, this grant will provide access to care for children living in the most impoverished areas of Egypt, where there is currently no access to pediatric cardiac medical care.

Farha, 4 years old.

All of the surgeries done through this grant will be performed by Rotarian and pediatric cardiac surgeon Dr. Hesham Shawky, as well as non-Rotarian pediatric cardiac surgeons Dr. Tarek Salah, Professor Dr. Hussam Hassanien, Dr. Hesham El Kadi, and Dr. Ehab El Sharkawi at the Cairo University Hospitals.

Ahmed, Tadros, Fahra, and two other children have already completed their operations! We will continue to keep you updated on other children throughout the year.
